Presenting in Korean, the filmmaker wanted the first work to place a Taiwanese visitor’s impressions alongside local explanations. Buyeo’s appeal was found not only in quiet streets, nature, food, history and culture, but also in residents who deeply understand and love their town.

What I found in Buyeo

The second work connects the population decline facing both Nantou and Buyeo with interviews about local entrepreneurs’ challenges and hopes. These include finding a distinctive idea, settling somewhere without established ties, limited visitor numbers, and the rewards of making desserts with local produce or running a bookshop.

Seeing how people in Buyeo love their town prompted a fresh look at the appeal of the filmmaker’s own city. Buyeo felt small, charming and worth experiencing as a place to live, with a hope to return when the opportunity arises.
